The new Epson R1900 ink jet color printer produces prints that will cause people to ask, "Where did you get that printed?" Making borderless prints up to 13-inches wide and up to 44-inches long is a breeze, even at home, with the printer. It uses Epson's UltraChrome Hi-Gloss 2 inks featuring an improved Gloss Optimizer along with new red and orange ink cartridges. Also new is Radiance Technology, co-developed by Epson and the Rochester Institute of Technology, which improves color transitions, resulting in brilliant, true-to-life colors in the prints. Both advanced photographers and serious amateurs will love the quality produced on the 13-inch printer and the speed. Epson tests have the printer making 11" x 14" prints as fast as 1 minute, 46 seconds, although users should be more concerned with quality than the few extra seconds a printer will take to print. But with this printer, users will get both the speed and quality second to none. Besides making superior large prints, the unit can print on all the standard paper types; glossy, luster and matte, along with canvas, roll paper and directly onto printable CD/DVDs. During my tests on various media, I was by far most impressed with prints done on glossy paper and canvas from digital images taken with a Canon 850IS. The results kept me glued to my computer printing until the ink ran out Maintenance is often a problem with ink jet printers and the R1900 has taken some preventative measures to extend its life with a new ink-repelling coating on the print head, which extends its life and decreases maintenance time. An automatic print head alignment and nozzle checking is done with a built-in sensor. Although the printer weighs about 27 lbs. and has a storage dimension of 24.3" x 12.7" x 8.4", it can easily sit on a desktop, assuming you have the open space. Two hi-speed USB 2.0 ports enable the printer to simultaneously connect for printing to multiple computers. Epson is also reaching out to the digital scrapbooking community with this printer. Earlier this year, they participated in the 2008 Craft & Hobby Association Winter Convention and Tradeshow in California, showcasing to the hobbyists that the printer is ideal for the 12"x12" digital scrapbook pages. Information: Suggested street price is $549.99 ($100 mail-in rebate offer through the end of April), www.epson.com The Tango X2 is one of the latest additions from XtremeMac to the iPod speaker world. A three way sound system includes speakers, tweeters, and a subwoofer in the unit to produce the sound from an AM/FM radio station or any iPod (not included) with a dock connector. In addition to the built-in iPod docking station, which sits on top of the attractive tabletop sound machine, it also has auxiliary line input for use with other MP3 players or devices along with a wireless remote. Six buttons are on top of the unit, for radio station presets and to control music from an outside device. The docking station will charge an iPod while it's in use, but not while using the radio. Information: $149.95, www.XtremeMac.com Iomega Corporation has a new high capacity portable hard drive, the Iomega eGo, which is available in dual interface models. The unit includes a 2.5-inch drive, which does not require an outside power supply and is available in up to five colors (jet black, silver, cherry red, flamingo pink and midnight blue) in 160 and 250GB options. For Windows users, the drive comes with EMC Retrospect HD software for automatic and scheduled backups. Mac users can use Time Machine from in Leopard, the latest Mac operating system. Dropping a hard drive is not a good idea, but this one has DropGuard technology to protect it from drops of up to 51-inches. Both 160GB units with USB 2.0 or USB 2.0/FireWire 400, have a suggested retail price of $139.95. In the 250GB versions the USB 2.0 is $179.95 and the USB 2.0/FireWire 400 is $199.95.
