Former French international midfielder Laurent Robert has signed a deal with Toronto FC that could have him in uniform in time for their next game of the MLS season, Saturday night in Washington against D.C. United

The 32-year-old Robert most recently saw limited duty with relegation-bound Derby County of the English Premier League. He has also played with Newcastle United, Portsmouth, Paris St-German in France, Portugal's Benfica and Levante in Spain during a pro career that began in 1994 with Montpellier of France's Ligue 1.

"We are thrilled to have Laurent join Toronto FC and become part of our club," said manager Mo Johnston in a statement.

"He's a tremendous player with a lot of talent and we expect him to come in and make an impact with our team straight away. He's played at every level, and is a true professional in every respect."

Robert's best career moments came with Newcastle United, where he played under current Toronto FC head coach John Carver.

"I've spent a lot of time with him, and I know a lot about his game," said Carver. "He'll be a big asset to the team, he's got pace, his ability on free kicks is top class and he's a great finisher."

Robert, a native of Saint-Benoit, La Reunion, has been capped nine times for France and scored once. Robert will be available for selection for Toronto's game on Saturday against D.C. United, pending the completion of his International Transfer Certificate, the club said in a news release.
