NEW YORK–Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price is the NHL rookie of the month.

He posted a 7-3-0 record, 2.67 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage last month to help Montreal clinch its first division title since 1992.

Price edged Edmonton Oilers centre Sam Gagner, Washington Capitals centre Nicklas Backstrom, Chicago Blackhawks right-winger Patrick Kane and Los Angeles Kings goaltender Eric Ersberg for the award.

Price allowed two or fewer goals in five of his 10 starts including a 4-0 shutout win over the New Jersey Devils on March 11.

In 39 appearances this season, Price has posted a record of 22-12-3 with a 2.64 GAA, .918 save percentage and three shutouts.

Montreal's first choice and the fifth overall selection at the 2005 NHL entry draft, Price led the American Hockey League's Hamilton Bulldogs to the Calder Cup Championship in 2007, capturing the MVP award for the playoffs.

The six-foot-three, 212-pound Vancouver native also backstopped Canada to a gold medal at the IIHF world junior championship in 2006.
