Short cut: Katie Holmes unveiled her new look after dining at Pizzeria Mozza in LA on Monday night.

Katie, who is rarely seen without husband firmly by her side, appeared to be uncharacteristically shy as she left the Italian restaurant, and kept her eyes downcast as she made her exit.

And this isn't the first time Katie's hair has attracted attention. Last year, Katie had her flowing girl-next-door tresses trimmed into a soft bob, later sharpening the look with a heavy fringe.

There has been speculation the cut is for her new role - Katie is in final negotiations to make her professional stage debut on Broadway in a revival of All My Sons, Arthur Miller's heartbreaking, post-World War II family drama.

It would be the first major revival of a Miller play since his death three years ago.

The actress has committed to taking part in a private workshop of the play in May. She will play the part of Ann Deever, a 26-year-old who visits her former neighbours the Kellers who are the family of a missing pilot she once loved.
