Homicide detectives are now trying to piece together details of a brawl that left one man dead in a Peel Region rooming house last night. Officers were called to the building on Shallford Rd. in Malton at around 7:15 p.m., where they found a man suffering from serious injuries. The victim was taken to hospital, where he died a short time later. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin. An autopsy is scheduled for today. Last night, police cordoned off the street as a forensic team arrived to gather evidence in the basement apartment of a semi-detached brick home they described as a rooming house. "We are speaking to several witnesses who were in the residence during the altercation," Const. Samantha Nulle said as officers began canvassing area residents. While Nulle said nobody was arrested, neighbours said they watched as one man was led away in handcuffs. The death is now listed as Peel's ninth homicide victim of the year. There were 14 homicides in the region in 2007. Const. Wayne Patterson said the increase is worrisome, but noted that 'last year, we solved all of our homicides, so this is behaviour that we don't tolerate.'
