'IDOL' CHATTER: The coaches have even more to say about these two
Don Waller: She's been turning everything into big, blowsy ballads where she nails all the notes with a sledgehammer! She's all technique; nothing unique. She should trust her talent enough to allow herself to show some sort of restraint instead of belting everything out like she was Kate Smith bellowing her way though God Bless America. Charlie Toft: Carly has backed away from the rocker persona and now seems to be modeling herself on Katharine McPhee. It's a mistake to go down this well-worn Idol path instead of playing up the female rock niche. Gene Sculatti: Carly needs to select good tunes and use her ample power more judiciously, trusting the softer end of her range and hauling out the howitzer only when it's really needed. Rona Elliot: Carly needs to embrace her beauty, femininity and vulnerability. She needs to soften up. Michael Johns Charlie: Michael Johns may be the very first male contestant who has been both a solid contender to win and a true heartthrob. He should play up that special connection he has with his female fans. Rona: He needs to own, at the cellular level, the concept of being a rock star. He needs to discover the exhibitionist within. Song-wise, he should keep it sexy, soulful, dramatic, yearning, fraught with tension. Don: Michael needs to do two things. First, start singing material that doesn't force him to concentrate so hard on hitting all the notes. Second, take a page out of the Taylor Hicks playbook and use his onstage mobility — put some motion into that emotion (and vice versa) — to distinguish him from rest of the pack. Gene: He needs to (very quickly) define himself more clearly through what he opts to sing. Viewers need to see Michael as someone whose efforts they can believe in as well as applaud.
