JAIPUR, India (AP) A truck collided with a van overcrowded with revelers returning from a wedding in western India on Thursday, killing 24 people, police said.
All 24 victims were traveling in the van when the accident occurred early Thursday about 80 miles northwest of Jodhpur, said city Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Narjari. An eight-year-old girl was the only survivor from the van, Narjari said. The cause of the crash was unclear because it occurred in a remote area in the early hours and there were no witnesses, he said. It was not immediately clear what happened to the driver of the truck, who may have fled the scene, he said. The CNN-IBN news channel quoted police as saying that seven of the victims died while being transported to the nearest hospital, which was more than 60 miles away. Deadly road accidents are common in India, frequently caused by poor roads, overcrowded vehicles and reckless driving. Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
